Agriculture: Youth Farmer Groups Gain New Hope for Higher Yields and Better Livelihoods Through Agricultural Support

Young farmers in Nyamasheke District are looking to the future with renewed confidence after receiving essential agricultural starter kits designed to strengthen their farming activities and improve their livelihoods.

As part of ongoing efforts to promote youth-led agriculture and enhance the value of agricultural enterprises, 19 youth farmer groups in Nyamasheke District received a range of farming equipment that will enable them to expand their agricultural production and agribusiness ventures.

The distribution took place on 4 August 2026 under the Shora Neza Project, implemented by DUHAMIC-ADRI in partnership with Nyamasheke District, with financial support from the Mastercard Foundation in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP).

The agricultural starter kits included 39 bicycles for transporting farm produce, 10 knapsack sprayers, 7 wheelbarrows, 108 hoes, 2 weighing scales with a capacity of up to 300 kilograms, shade nets for protecting crops, 38 watering cans, and 2 laptop computers. These resources will help the youth groups improve farm operations, reduce post-harvest losses, and streamline agricultural activities from production to market.

Speaking after receiving the equipment, members of the beneficiary groups expressed optimism about the future of their farming enterprises. They noted that the support would enable them to increase production, adopt more innovative farming practices, transport their harvests more efficiently, access markets with greater ease, and ultimately generate higher incomes from their businesses.

The Shora Neza Project seeks to transform youth agriculture into a profitable agribusiness by increasing productivity, strengthening crop resilience, and creating sustainable employment opportunities for young people.
