THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S COUNCIL TO HELPING 529 FAMILIES OVERCOME CONFLICTS

On 25 August 2026, Nyamasheke District held the General Assembly of the National Women’s Council under the theme: “The Role of Women in Building a Capable and Secure Family.”

The meeting was attended by the Mayor of Nyamasheke District, Mr. Mupenzi Narcisse, accompanied by some members of the District Security Committee, representatives of the National Women’s Council from the village to the district level, and selected District partners.

In his opening remarks, Mayor Mupenzi Narcisse highlighted the important role of women in building capable and secure families. He called upon women to continue contributing to efforts to combat illicit brews and to support initiatives aimed at guiding young people towards responsible and positive behaviour.

The Mayor further noted that families are facing various challenges, particularly those contributing to the erosion of positive values and the development of undesirable behaviours among young people. He called upon parents to reflect on their responsibilities and strengthen their role in supporting and guiding young people so that they grow into future Rwandan citizens who uphold positive Rwandan values.

Ms. Mukakabogora Anastasie, the Nyamasheke District Coordinator of the National Women’s Council, highlighted various initiatives undertaken by the Council in collaboration with District authorities and partners, particularly those aimed at improving community welfare. Among the notable achievements was the support provided to families affected by conflicts during the 2025–2026 period.

Out of 709 families identified as living in conflict, 529 families were supported to overcome their conflicts. Among the families that overcame their conflicts were 150 families living in informal or legally unrecognized unions, which had contributed to family disputes.

Discussions during the General Assembly highlighted the important role of women in building capable and secure families. Participants discussed some of the challenges affecting families and the actions needed to empower women to serve as agents of positive change in building stable, capable and secure families.

During the meeting, the National Women’s Council at the District level also signed the 2026–2027 Mutimawurugo performance commitments (Imihigo) with the Mayor of Nyamasheke District.
